I’m Moving!

After much thought, I’ve decided to move this blog to creatingcode.com.

The new feed location is here – Creating Code

Here are the following changes I am going to make when switching over to Creating Code

  • Create more programming centric articles.
  • Focus on quality over quantity
  • Keep the same light-hearted attitude towards the delivery of the content, while taking the production of the content more seriously.

There are a couple of articles I’ve written for Cube Antics that I think have some real promise, but are lacking in either depth…

Starting a WordPress Theme From Scratch

So much of web design today is duplicating effort. This is especially true for creating WordPress themes because of the extra blog code that needs to be hooked into each theme.

I started a new project on GitHub called MinWP that will contain all of the source files necessary to get started with a new WordPress theme. The goal is to create a fully functional 2-column theme with absolutely no additional design elements added to it.

Now, to create a new WordPress theme,…

Worrying About Small Details Can Kill Your Project

It’s amazing how seemingly insignificant things can completely derail a software project. I was working on my first project of the year -a simple online Regex tool- and abruptly stopped work when I realized that the name I had chosen wasn’t good enough. I then proceeded to obsess off and on for days until I came around full-circle and decided to stick with what I originally came up with.

Not only was this a horrible waste of time, it completely killed…

B&N Nook: Unboxing the World’s Most Advanced eBook Reader

I got the Barnes & Noble nook as a late birthday present. I’m one of the first people in the world to get one, so I thought I’d share my experience. I will write a more detailed review once I get a chance to actually use the nook. Enjoy.

First Impressions

  • Sexy Packaging: B&N took a page right out of the Apple playbook.
  • The tactile feeling on the back of the device is both tacky (feeling) and comfortable
  • The eInk screen is an absolute pleasure…

Welcome to Cube Antics Version 3.0

My blog has just gone through it’s 3rd re-design since it’s creation and I have to say that this one is my favorite by far. I like minimalistic designs that focus on the content of a site rather than it’s look. However, I don’t think that’s a good excuse to skimp on the design.

The design is called Basic Maths and was created by the legendary Khoi Vinh of subtraction.com.

One of the most interesting design aspects of Basic Maths is the grid…

Google Go: My Take on Issue 9

Here’s my take on the Google Go programming language Issue 9 fiasco.

The Background

You know that awesome new programming language Google is coming out with called Go? It turns out that Francis McCabe has already created a programming language called Go! almost 5 years ago. In fact, he even wrote a book about it that was published in February of 2007 (in addition to several articles).

Enter Issue 9

So, like any responsible member of the programming community, Francis opened up an issue in the Go issue tracking…

Project 10^100 – Vote to Change the World!

The 10100 project is a Google inspired attempt to change the wold by funding (at least) one “big idea” submitted by it’s users over the past year. Over 150,000 submissions were accepted by Google, compartmentalized, and re-worked into sixteen great causes. Now, Google has left it to us to decide how their investment money should be spent by letting us vote for our favorite project.

This is a simple and free way to do your part in making our world a better place.…

My New Business Cards Have Arrived!

I designed some business cards a couple of weeks ago and they finally arrived.
The tag cloud was generated using Wordle.

Here is a snapshot.

My MBTI Profile Assessment Results

A friend at work introduced me to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment. I’m surprised I didn’t hear about this test before now, but what can you do?

You can take it for free at HumanMetrics (please forgive the design, i’m sure they meant well).

For anyone interested, my personality rated INTJ (socially awkward).
Introverted (78%)
iNtuitive (75%)
Thinking (88%)
Judging (78%)

The “Carreer Indicator” suggested I become a computer programmer which is kind of interesting how I fell into the profession that this test said I would…
